LIGHT EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT

Supporting remote communities in the developing world.

LED began as a project in the late 1990’s to bring affordable and sustainable solar light, education supplies and basic medical care. Time is divided between the high mountain villages of the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash in Northern Peru and the Manasalu region of northern Nepal.

The LED project was founded by Val Pitkethly, mountain guide and climber, who over many years has established a special relationship with many of the local indigenous peoples of these regions.

LED  was formerly established as a company in 2008, and as a registered charity in 2011. We are funded solely through the donations  of those associated with Val’s trekking work, allied UK schools and friends. Additional help and financial support has also been provided by the Juniper Trust (see below).

Administered by volunteers, the aim of LED is to provide low-tech solutions to 3 basic needs; Cheap affordable lighting, basic education and healthcare. All of these leading to economic development for the poorest people in these regions.

In recent years with the support of interested individuals and organisations, activities have spiralled. In 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 LED has supplied solar lighting units to over 1000 families.

The total number of lights in Peru (Including donations form the Juniper Trust) now exceeds 2500. In Nepal we have provided 170 lights and 50 in both Ethiopia and India.

Educational supplies have been donated to over 20 Peruvian schools.

Medical supplies and solar lights have been provided to Nepal, India and Peru since 2004.

Additionally a  clinic  has been built in the village of Quishar and staffed with a paid local health worker.
Initially funded through generous private donations from friends and associates LED has worked to support this venture.
This new clinic provides basic healthcare and health education for numerous villages in the region.

In coming years LED plans to continue to fund  schools
and provide more solar lighting and medical supplies to impoverished families.

In the near future it is planned to build a small accommodation extension to the clinic to enable volunteer doctors to extend their stay and offer a wider range of treatments and advice.
